India cricketer Dinesh Karthik had a say on appointing dual captains in the white-ball formats, stating the picture will only get clearer after the 2023 ODI World Cup.

While there is still no uncertainty on the T20I future of India's ODI skipper Rohit Sharma, the opener had expressed his willingness to return to play shortest-format for the national team.

While Hardik Pandya currently leads India in the T20Is, he is yet to be officially appointed as the full-time captain of the team.

Speaking to Cricbuzz on the chaotic state of Indian cricket, Karthik cited that Rohit's next run in the T20Is will only be decided after the ODI magnum opus, scheduled to be held later this year.

The wicket-keeper believes that if Rohit and India do not deliver as per the expectations in the upcoming ICC event, then we can expect the introduction of split captaincy in white-ball cricket.

Here's what Karthik said:

"If the case presents itself, why not? But right now, it is not right for me to say for two reasons. One, India are only playing three T20s after this until the 2023 World Cup, they face the West Indies after the IPL. Once that tournament is done, I think we will know exactly where things stand.

"If Rohit Sharma's team doesn't go on to do something special there, we could very well see a chance of split captaincy, I guess the opportunity will present itself at that point of time. Whereas if Rohit goes on to achieve something special, we will all like to think differently and give him a crack at the 2024 T20 World Cup if he himself is willing to play that.

"For the moment, I do believe that Hardik has done a phenomenal job. Case in point being the T20 that was played against Sri Lanka in Mumbai. That was a great game. Stopping Sri Lanka for 160 was a terrific effort on a day where there was little dew. He showed his captaincy prowess there."

Meanwhile Hardik's India are 1-0 down in a three-match T20I series versus New Zealand. The next match will be played on January 29 in Lucknow.
