Match 4 of the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2022 will see the Brisbane Heat square off against the Melbourne Stars at the Ray Mitchell Oval in Mackay. The Heat are coming off a narrow loss against the Sydney Sixers and will look to make use of the Stars’ rustiness first up. However, the Stars will look to cash on the Heat’s lack of confidence after a defeat.

The Heat, under Jess Jonassen, would want to improve their batting performance. Despite getting starts, most of their batters failed to take the initiative and were guilty of throwing wickets. Bowling, too, lacked venom and gave away too many easy deliveries. They must come out of over-reliance on Kerr sisters — Jess and Amelia.

Stars were dealth with a massive blow with the unavailabilty of regular captain Meg Lanning.  Veteran Nicole Faltum will take over leadership. Indian middle-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues will miss out due to playing for India in the Women's Asia Cup final.

The batting will revolve around on Lauren Winfield-Hill, Alice Capsey, Kim Garth and Sasha Moloney.  Sophie Day and Annabel Sutherland adds more flavour to a versatile line-up.

Key Players:

  • Jess Kerr: One of the most disciplined bowlers going around, Kerr showcased her prowess to near perfection against Sydney Sixers. Her line and length bowling is a welcoming addition to Heat's pace bowling.
  • Alice Capsey: The 18-year-old is touted to be the next big thing in English cricket. Known for her hard-hitting style of batting, the opener is coming off an excellent 2022 in T20I cricket, scoring 234 runs.
  • Anna Sutherland: Hoping to give Ellyse Perry a run for her money in the Australian set up, Sutherland has impressed critics with her all-around cricket for Victoria. A World Cup winner, the 20-year-old hopes to make a mark for the Stars this season.

Pitch Report

The pitch produced an absolute thriller in the tournament opener on Thursday. It had a bit of assistance for the bowlers, but that did not overpower the batting aspect. However, the track does tend to slow down toward the second half of the innings. The captain that wins the toss should opt to bat first.
