Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Monday, May 12.
Virat Kohli Retires From Test Cricket
After days of speculation, legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket. The cricketer made his debut back in 2011, and played the last of his 123 Tests during India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of Australia earlier this year. While Kohli confirmed his retirement roughly a month prior to India’s five-match series in England from mid-June onwards, the 36-year-old also did so mere days after his teammate Rohit Sharma exited the format.
Rishad Hossain Apologises To Tom Curran And Daryl Mitchell
In a social media post, Bangladesh cricketer Rishad Hossain has issued an apology to his Lahore Qalandars teammates Daryl Mitchell and Tom Curran. Earlier, Hossain had publicly revealed that Curran “cried like a child” and Mitchell vowed “to never return back to Pakistan” when the nation came under attack from cross-border attacks from India, which itself was in retaliation to the 2025 Pahalgam terrorist attack. India’s retaliation also prompted the PCB to postpone the PSL 2025 season.
Franchises Unlikely To Force Overseas Players To Return: Report
Recent report indicates that the IPL franchises are unlikely to force overseas players to return back to India upon the resumption of the 2025 season. Several local as well as international stars flew back to their respective homes last week when the tournament was suspended by the BCCI in light of India’s cross-border tensions with Pakistan.
While IPL 2025 is expected to resume within the next few days, a CEO of a franchise has reportedly stated that they will not force anyone to return to the country for the remaining matches.
IPL 2025 Schedule Updated By BCCI
The IPL 2025 season is set to resume on May 17 with a match between RCB and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru. Back on May 8 earlier this month, the BCCI suspended the tournament by a week in the light of India’s geo-political and cross-border tensions with Pakistan. The first qualifier will be played on May 29, and it will be followed by an Eliminator the following day. The second qualifier and the final of the season have now been re-scheduled to June 1 and June 3 respectively.
Chamari Athapaththu Handed Demerit Point
Sri Lankan captain and legendary all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu has been fined 10 percent of her match fees for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The apex body confirmed the same a day after the Women’s ODI tri-series came to a conclusion in Colombo. The incident in question occurred during the match between Sri Lanka and South Africa earlier this month, Athapaththu took off her sunglasses and smashed them to the ground after getting hit for a boundary by Annerie Dercksen.
