There was uncertainty surrounding Rohit's availability for the first Test, with the management unsure until just a few days before the match. Ultimately, it was confirmed that the Indian captain would arrive on November 24 to rejoin the squad, thereby missing the opening Test entirely.
India is scheduled to participate in a warm-up match prior to the second Test, and it is anticipated that the regular captain, Rohit Sharma, will take the field at that time.
In his absence, pacer Jasprit Bumrah, the designated vice-captain, took the role of stand-in captain. Rohit’s absence had earlier raised significant concerns regarding India’s prospects in the BGT, particularly following a recent 3-0 home series defeat against New Zealand.
India's Remarkable Performance In The Perth Test
Along with Rohit Sharma not available, Shubman Gill also missed the first Test due to finger injury. With both openers missing the match, the pressure was definitely on the team. And this was visible on day 1 of the Perth Test when India’s batting order faltered and collapsed like pack of cards with a mere total of 150 runs.
However, India’s bowlers showcased their strength and staged an impressive recovery, led by stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed five wickets.
Nonetheless, the second innings demonstrated a remarkable turnaround, with openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal establishing a solid partnership that steadied the innings at the start. In the middle-order Virat Kohli's remarkable century stabilised the innings. India declared the innings at 487/6, with a commanding lead of 533 runs.
