Day 1 of the IPL 2025 auctions ended on Sunday and all the ten teams fought hard to get. the services of their desired players. While some of the buys made sense, some were disaster-class and might turn out to be a waste of money.
Teams like Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals made shrewd buys, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) looked clueless and failed to pick up a captaincy material on Day 1 of the auctions. Before Sunday, it was speculated that RCB will go after the likes of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for captaincy role, but the franchise didn't get anyone and now will have to rejig their strategy for Day 2.
Almost all their first choice captaincy materials have been sold to the other teams, and now RCB are left with little to no choice when it comes to filling up that role. Hence, we look at 3 captaincy choices for RCB, keeping in mind the Day 2 auction.
3) Get Faf Du Plessis back through RTM
Faf du Plessis joined RCB in 2022 and the charismatic leader took RCB to two playoffs in three seasons. His captaincy was inspiring and the players gelled well throughout the last three seasons.
Plus, he was RCB's leading run getter from 2022 and even at the age of 40, he is still fitter than most of the youngsters. Will no reliable captaincy material available, RCB could try and get back Faf using the RTM.
2) X-Factor Sam Curran to lead RCB
Since RCB's first choice captains have all been gone, they could spring a surprise by picking up Sam Curran for a low price in the auction. The English all-rounder previously led Punjab Kings in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan and could be a decent shout for RCB captain.
A wily all-rounder, Curran has plethora of IPL experience and despite being a risky pick, he could turn out to be a master stroke for RCB, who are in desperate need of a skipper.
1) The 'OG' Kohli returns
A couple of months ago, Kohli indirectly hinted at RCB captaincy by stating that if the team needs him, he can return as the captain of the side. Seems like the team actually needs his services as the leader, since they didn't bid for anyone in the auction.
Kohli, previously led RCB from 2013-2021 and took them to the finals in 2016. Of all the names mentioned here, he is a safe choice and RCB can count on him. The leading run scorer in IPL left the captaincy as he wanted to concentrate on his batting. Now, towards the twilight of his career, will he accept the captaincy proposal? It will be interesting to see.
