Pakistan narrowly dodged disaster and snatched a heart-stopping seven-wicket victory against Ireland in Match 36 of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida.

With both teams already knocked out of the tournament, this clash had no bearing on the standings but was charged with unexpected drama.

Choosing to field first, Pakistan's bowlers clamped down on Ireland, limiting them to a paltry 106/9. Yet, the chase turned into a nail-biter as Pakistan flirted dangerously with collapse.

In true theatrical fashion, captain Babar Azam held his nerve and stuck to one end with wickets falling at the other.

Just when all seemed perilous, Shaheen Afridi delivered a whirlwind cameo, catapulting Pakistan across the finish line with a flourish, securing victory with seven wickets and breaths to spare.

Here’s the timeline of how PAK vs IRE panned out in Florida.

Pakistan's bowling attack, led by Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Amir, hit the ground running after Babar Azam elected to bowl first.

Afridi swiftly removed Andrew Balbirnie (0) and Lorcan Tucker (2) in a devastating opening over, setting the tone for a tough innings for Ireland.

Mohammad Amir joined the fray, claiming the wicket of Irish skipper Paul Stirling (1), followed by Harry Tector (0) who was trapped in front of the wicket by Afridi.

George Dockrell tried to counterattack but was dismissed by Amir, leaving Ireland floundering at 32/5 after the powerplay.

Curtis Campher was also dismissed in the subsequent over by Haris Rauf for 7. With their backs against the wall, Gareth Delany and Mark Adair dug deep, stitching together a crucial 44-run partnership for the seventh wicket.

Their fight shone through as they capitalized on any loose deliveries, gradually steering Ireland away from total collapse. However, their revival was cut short when Delany was dismissed by Imad Wasim for 31.

Adair continued the resistance until he too was caught out for 15. Joshua Little provided some late fireworks, remaining unbeaten on 22, helping Ireland post a modest total of 106/9 by the innings' close.

PAK vs IRE Highlights: Rizwan and Ayub Start Brightly Before Latter Perishes

Pakistan's innings began on a high note with openers Mohammad Rizwan and Saim Ayub at the helm, quickly putting together an energetic 23-run stand.

Their partnership featured a series of well-timed shots, setting a positive tone for the chase. However, the bright start hit a snag when Mark Adair dismissed Ayub for 17, putting the first dent in Pakistan's batting lineup.

Following Ayub’s departure, Rizwan continued briefly before falling for the same score to Barry McCarthy, getting caught at deep fine leg.

Fakhar Zaman’s ongoing struggles culminated in yet another dismissal, this time by Curtis Campher. His wicket signalled the beginning of a dramatic collapse, with Pakistan spiralling from 52/2 to 62/6.

The middle order crumbled as Usman Khan, Shadab Khan, and Imad Wasim all fell in quick succession.

PAK vs IRE Highlights: Babar and Afridi Pull Through in the Clutch

Amidst the chaos, skipper Babar Azam took charge, anchoring the innings with a calm and collected approach.

As wickets fell around him, Babar played a captain’s knock, steadying the ship with an unbeaten 32 off 34 balls.
