Sanju Samson, fresh from his prolific run in IPL 2024, is yet to find a place in the Indian playing XI in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. The dashing wicketkeeper-batter scored 531 runs in last month’s IPL season for the Rajasthan Royals at a staggering strike-rate of over 150.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that the Indian team management should continue to employ Shivam Dube in the middle-order, and should only pick Samson if the all-rounder was struggling to get runs.

While speaking with CREX on June 16, former Test opener and cricket expert Aakash Chopra said that Sanju Samson is yet to prove himself as a proficient middle-order batter because he has not been handed enough opportunities at the position. The cricketer-turned-commentator further opined that Samson also bats at number three in the IPL for the Rajasthan Royals, and bringing him into India’s 2024 T20 World Cup playing XI as a middle or a lower-order batter would not be “such a smart move”.

Aakash Chopra believes that a grand stage like the World Cup is not a place to experiment, and teams should enter such tournaments with pre-determined answers. The 46-year-old added that the Indian team management should continue with Shivam Dube for the time being, considering the dashing all-rounder recently played a match-defining knock against the USA.

Shivam Dube scored an unbeaten 31 from 35 balls against USA to steer India home with seven wickets and a couple of overs to spare.

India’s win over USA marked their third in succession, as they finished the league stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup at the top of the Group A points table.
