CSK's Request To Bring MS Dhoni As Uncapped Player Unlikely To Be Upheld

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) reportedly made a bold request to bring back their legendary captain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player to navigate the complexities of retention policies. But it appears unlikely that this request will be upheld by the IPL authorities.

IPL mega auction for the 2025 edition is expected to go on floors later in the year. However, ahead of the big auction event, the league authorities and BCCI body held a meeting with franchise owners this week to discuss retention policy and also seek feedback on the impact player rule.

MS Dhoni unlikely to play IPL as Uncapped Player

Apparently, the meeting held in Mumbai got heated after PBKS owner Ness Wadia and KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan had an argument over the number of retentions.  Also, BCCI reportedly plans to introduce a separate retention category for uncapped players.

Meanwhile, CSK finds themselves in a dilemma regarding MS Dhoni’s retention. The 43-year-old, who guided CSK to glory, passed on the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad this year.

Moreover, due to lack of necessary retentions, CSK apparently mulled to bring back Dhoni as an uncapped player. As per a rule that existed in the past, any retired player could be placed in the uncapped category post five years of retirement.

However, as per latest rumours, BCCI are unlikely to entertain this idea. The old rule won’t be enforced again whereas the controversial impact player is expected to stay at least for the 2025 IPL edition.

Now, it remains to be seen how CSK tackles MS Dhoni’s conundrum. He clearly does not fall in CSK's top five priority list, and if IPL reduce the retention cap, Dhoni might not return for CSK in 2025.
