Shocking IPL 2025 Update: 3 Big Rule Changes Expected Ahead Of 2025 Mega Auction

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) gears up for the 2025 season, the boardrooms of BCCI and IPL franchises are abuzz with strategies and potential shifts in the league's structure.

Recently, a crucial meeting unfolded, discussing everything from player retention policies to the very framework of the mega auction.

Let’s take a look at the three IPL rule changes that are likely to happen ahead of the auction.

First IPL Rule Change: Reclassification of Retired Players

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), led by their CEO Kasi Viswanathan, have lobbed a curveball into the discussions, proposing to revisit a rule discarded in 2021.

They are pushing for the reclassification of players retired from international cricket for five or more years as uncapped players.

This move, seen as a ploy to retain their veteran, MS Dhoni, under more favourable terms, has sparked both intrigue and resistance across the board.

While CSK sees it as a backdoor to safeguard their marquee player, other franchises are wary of opening this Pandora's box again.

Second IPL Rule Change: Lowering the Base Price

In a bid to prevent top-tier talents from warming the auction benches, IPL CEO Hemang Amin has floated the idea of allowing capped players to reduce their base price.

This potential lifeline could ensure that star players, who might otherwise go unsold due to high base prices, find their bids in the frenzied auction environment.

The suggestion has split the room, with discussions also veering towards extending the duration of the mega auction, argued by most teams as a necessary step to create team stability.

However, Delhi Capitals' owner Parth Jindal stood as a lone dissenting voice, questioning the need for a mega auction altogether in 2025.

Third IPL Rule Change: Expanding the Retention Quota

The retention policy, often a hotbed of strategic planning, is once again in the limelight. The current framework allows teams to retain up to three Indian and two overseas players.

However, there's a growing chorus among several franchises advocating for an increase in these numbers to either seven or eight.

This change could significantly alter team dynamics, allowing franchises to build deeper cores and maintain continuity.
