The Pakistan cricket team slumped to a shock defeat at the hands of USA in match number 11 of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup.

Under the leadership of Babar Azam, the ‘Men in Green’ managed to tie down USA within a run of overcoming their target, before the tournament co-hosts emerged victorious in a clutch Super Over thriller at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.

After the match, captain Babar assessed his team’s shortcomings in the game, and vowed to make a stronger comeback in their remaining Group A fixtures of the tournament.

Babar Azam says batters ‘couldn’t capitalize’ powerplay

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Pakistan captain Babar Azam said that his batters failed to capitalize in the opening powerplay after being put to bat first by USA.

The Pakistani skipper also stated that his bowlers failed to hold down USA during the earlier stages of the run-chase, and the spinners (Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed) proved ineffective by going wicketless in the middle overs. He said:

“I think, the first six overs while batting, we couldn't capitalize. We couldn't get the momentum and we lost back-to-back wickets. You have to really step up as a batter to build partnerships. To be honest, we were not up to the mark in the first six overs. Our spinners also were not picking wickets in the middle overs.”

Babar Azam also credited USA for putting up a comprehensive performance in all aspects of the game, and vowed to make a stronger comeback in the remainder of the 2024 T20 World Cup. He added:

“We will come back stronger but we were not up to the mark today. We will learn from the mistakes. Credit to the USA team for playing well in all the departments. They played well and hence, they won the match.”

Babar Azam and co. will now go up against perennial arch-rivals India in a must-win game on June 9. The match will be hosted by New York’s Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.
