India experienced a significant setback as the 'Men in Blue' lost an ODI series on Sri Lankan soil for the first time in 27 years. Rohit Sharma and Co. were defeated 2-0 in a three-match series on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.

The third ODI saw India chasing a target of 249 but being bowled out for 138 in 26.1 overs. Sri Lanka's spinners, particularly Dunith Wellalage, who took 5 for 27, played a pivotal role in India's downfall.

Rohit Sharma and Washington Sundar were the only Indian batsmen to offer some resistance, and scored 35 and 30 runs, respectively.

It Has Been A Poor Series For Us- Rohit Sharma On IND's defeat

Following India's defeat, captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged the team's shortcomings in planning and strategy. He emphasised the need for careful consideration of player selection, especially on challenging pitches, and stressed the importance of consistency in team selection.

"Somewhere, we need to think about what we can do, which players should be given opportunities on such wickets. However, when you're playing on such challenging pitches, it is also important to have consistency in your team selection." Rohit Sharma said.

Rohit also mentioned that giving players only one or two opportunities makes it difficult for them to adapt and perform in such situations. He admitted that the series had been poor for India, conceding that their performance was not up to par, which led to the disappointing results.

If you give players only one or two opportunities, it isn't easy for them to manage such situations. We tried. We even wanted to try out a few players. It has been a poor series for us, we accept it. We didn't play good cricket and that's why we have the result that we have today."

Talking about the match, in the first innings, Sri Lanka set a competitive total of 248/7 with significant contributions from Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis. Riyan Parag made an impressive debut as he scalped 3 for 54.

India couldn't capitalise and fell short, which marked a challenging start for head coach Gautam Gambhir in his first assignment. The second ODI had also ended in a loss for India by 32 runs, while the first match concluded in a thrilling tie.
