On August 6, 1997, Sanath Jayasuriya delivered a legendary performance at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, as he scored 340 runs against India. 

Jayasuriya's monumental knock, which included 36 boundaries and two sixes, was pivotal as Sri Lanka amassed a total of 952 runs in their innings. This remarkable innings remains the second-highest individual score by a Sri Lankan in Test cricket history, with Mahela Jayawardene holding the record with 374 runs against South Africa.

Talking about the match, Sri Lanka lost the toss and was put in the field, Jayasuriya also made a significant impact will the ball and took three wickets in India's first innings, which saw India declare at 537/8.

 Sanath Jayasuriya, who was already well-established, completed a triple century with 326 runs. Roshan Mahanama also contributed with a double century and formed a formidable partnership.

On the fifth day, Jayasuriya continued his dominance, and eventually completed 340 runs from 578 balls before being dismissed by India's Rajesh Chauhan. Sri Lanka declared their innings at 952 runs, and despite the monumental effort, the match ended in a draw.
