Sri Lanka crushed the visiting Indian team by 110 runs in the third ODI to secure their first bilateral series win over the ‘Men in Blue’ in 27 years.

Sri Lankan openers Pathum Nissanka (45 off 65 balls) and Avishka Fernando shared 89 runs together for the first wicket until the former was deceived by Axar Patel at the brink of a well-deserved half-century. 

After Nissanka’s exit, a well-set Fernando staged 82 additional runs with number three Kusal Mendis to take Sri Lanka past the 150-run mark in less than 31 overs.

Fernando top-scored in the innings by smacking 96 off 102 balls. Belting nine boundaries and two sixes in the process, his stay was curtailed by Indian debutant Riyan Parag. Mendis also struck an imperial half-century, forming 59 runs from his end of the crease.

Following the dismissal of opener Avishka Fernando, Sri Lanka also lost captain Charith Asalanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Janith Liyanage and Dunith Wellalage as the hosts slipped from 171-1 to 199-6 in the space of an hour.

Debutant Riyan Parag claimed two of those wickets to bag impressive figures of 3-54 from nine overs. Washington Sundar (1-29) and Mohammed Siraj (1-78) also contributed in Sri Lanka’s middle-order collapse with a wicket each. The hosts eventually conjured some resistance at the death to reach 248-7 by the completion of their 50 overs.

Chasing 249 to level the series, Indian captain Rohit Sharma belted six boundaries and a six to slap a fiery 20-ball 35-run knock at the top of the order. The legendary opener shared 37 rapid runs with struggling batter Shubman Gill until the latter was knocked over by Asitha Fernando.

Shortly after Rohit Sharma blazed India past the 50-run mark in less than seven overs, the Indian skipper induced a bottom edge towards Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis against rising spin wizard Dunith Wellalage. Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli also followed suite as India slipped to 71-4 in 10.5 overs.

After accounting for the wickets of Indian batting giants Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, young left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage also dismissed Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer in a single over as the hosts stumbled further at 82-6.

Fellow spin colleagues Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay also collected two wickets in their brief spells before Wellalage mopped up the Indian tail at 138 to finish with figures of 5-27 in 5.1 overs.

Sri Lanka eventually secured a huge 110-run win to pocket the three-match ODI series by a 2-0 margin.
