Former Pakistan cricketer Moin Khan recently accused ex-PCB chairman Ramiz Raja of demoralising his son, Azam Khan, by dropping him from the national team without justification during the 2021 and 2024 T20 World Cup.

Azam Khan, son of former Pakistan captain Moin Khan, first rose to fame with his powerful hitting ability as a finisher. However, despite promising talent, his career never took off as he expected due to concerning fitness levels.

The wicket-keeper batter often faced rejections for his heavier physique, which many deem unacceptable according to international cricket standards.

Yet Azam Khan was selected as Pakistan’s first-choice wicket-keeper batter for the 2021 and 2024 T20 World Cup.

Moin Khan calls out PCB's injustice against son Azam Khan

However, his father Moin Khan, has now accused former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja of unlawfully dropping Azam Khan from the 2021 T20 World Cup squad.

He argued that Ramiz lacked the courage to hold selectors responsible for what was a bad selection choice in his opinion. And instead he dropped Azam without any realistic reason and demoralised him deeply.

"In the 2022 World Cup, Azam was also selected for the team, but Ramiz Raja dropped him. At that time, if the chief selector had made a wrong selection, he should have been removed, but they didn't have the courage, and as a result, they demoralized a young player," Moin Khan said.

Not only that, Moin Khan slammed the Pakistan cricket team for dropping Azam Khan after just one game in the 2024 T20 World Cup. He claimed that his son was the first choice wicket-keeper but after a duck against USA, the team’s plan suddenly changed.

"Azam was the number one choice for wicketkeeping and batting. Then suddenly, after just one match, the entire strategy was changed. Azam wasn't given a chance to keep wickets after one match and was dropped after getting out on the very first ball. Whether it's the captain or the management, if they make such quick changes to players, how can we produce good players?"

However, Moin Khan understands that Azam also needs to work on his fitness and mental strength to avoid such instances in the future.

"I'm not saying that all the blame lies with the team management and the captain; Azam has his own shortcomings too. He needs to make himself physically and mentally stronger, follow the fitness routines of other sportsmen."

PCB to implement strict fitness rules

Azam Khan’s future with Pakistan cricket appears in danger as PCB is set to implement a strict fitness regime. As per reports, PCB plans on reintroducing Yo-Yo tests to monitor the fitness levels of national players.

The tests will be conducted in phases and the ones to fail will be stripped off national as well as regional competitions. Azam Khan, meanwhile, is currently playing CPL but is expected to undergo tests at a later date.
