Piyush Chawla is one of the most successful bowlers in the history of IPL and has picked 192 wickets in as many games. He has played all the seasons of the IPL except the 2022 one, and the 35-year-old was once again impressive in the 2024 season with 13 wickets in 11 matches.
The talented leg-spinner made his Test debut as a 17-year-old back in 2006 against England and went onto play across formats for the country. He was also part of India's 2011 World Cup triumph, and though his international career did not take off as expected initially, his longevity and performance in IPL and domestic cricket have always been admired in Indian cricketing circles.
Now, in a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, Piyush Chawla opened up about his longevity and retirement plans. The host Shubhankar asked him whether he would retire first or MS Dhoni, to which Chawla quickly replied that Mahendra Singh Dhoni would retire first.
In a light-hearted tone, Chawla mentioned that Prithvi Shaw recently told him to retire, but Chawla bluntly trolled Shaw by stating that he has played with Sachin Tendulkar and is now playing with his son and the same thing will happen with Prithvi Shaw and his son. Piyush Chawla added that once he goes onto play with Prithvi Shaw's son, he will retire completely from the game.
"Mahi bhai. A while ago, Prithvi Shaw told me 'Bas karo yaar ab PC bhai'. I said, I've played with Sachin paaji, and now playing with his son. I am playing with you, and after playing with your son, I will retire."
Piyush Chawla's Journey In IPL
Piyush Chawla started off his IPL career with Punjab Kings (Kings XI Punjab earlier) and picked up 17 wickets in the maiden season. In the following years, he became an important member of Kings XI Punjab and played for them till IPL 2013. In 2014, he was bought by KKR for 4.25 Crore and he continued with Knight Riders till IPL 2019.
Ahead of the 2020 season, he was bought by Chennai Super Kings for 6.75 Crore but was released ahead of the next season and was bought by Mumbai Indians in 2021. He only played one game in that season, and missed the 2022 season as well, but came back strongly in the 2023 season and delivered his best season with 22 wickets in 16 matches. He was pretty successful for Mumbai Indians in the last season as well and is expected to find plenty of buyers in the IPL 2025 auction.
