Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has come out in support of cricketers Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan following their omission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) central contracts list announced at the end of February.

Despite not being retained on the BCCI's list, Harbhajan stated that both players remain contenders for national selection based on their performance and the team's requirements.

Harbhajan Singh backs excluded duo Iyer and Kishan

While speaking to Hindustan Times, Harbhajan Singh conveyed that not securing a central contract doesn't signal the end of the road for any player. He highlighted that selection for the national team is always an open process, influenced by a player's current form and the strategic needs of the team.

"Every player is available for the selection process. Now whether they will be selected is a different aspect because it depends on their form and whether the team requires their services. Just because they didn't get a contract, it doesn't mean it's the end of the road for them," said Harbhajan.

Additionally, Harbhajan supported the BCCI's new policy, which mandates that all fit players not engaged in international duties must be available to play for their state teams. This move by the cricket board, according to Harbhajan, should be seen as a developmental step aimed at enhancing the players' skills and overall game.

In his discussion about Iyer and Kishan's exclusion, Harbhajan also pointed out the duo’s potential and optimism for their future contributions to Indian cricket. He believes that both players are capable of overcoming this setback and will continue to be valuable assets for the national team, contributing to India's success in international cricket.

"It's a learning step for them. Whatever step was taken was for their betterment, that is how they should take it. I look at this in a rather constructive way because from hereon, I feel they could emerge as better players. But we still do not know what was going on in their heads. They are both brilliant cricketers and I feel they will win a lot of matches for India in the future," added the Indian veteran.

It remains to be seen how Iyer and Kishan will take their careers forward after being excluded from the BCCI's central contracts list. With the backing of veterans like Harbhajan and a clear path to return to national consideration through domestic performance, both players have the opportunity to prove their mettle, starting with the upcoming IPL 2024.
