Why Are Shreyas Iyer And Ishan Kishan Removed From BCCI Central Contracts?

The BCCI have announced the list of contracted players for 2023-24 and two big exclusion from the list are Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. Both of them were part of India's memorable World Cup 2023 campaign and have been pretty successful as international cricketers.

The players like Avesh Khan, Rajat Patidar have also been included in the Grade C despite playing handful of matches and BCCI have clearly mentioned in their advisory that Shreyas and Ishan have not been considered for the contracts.

Why have BCCI dropped Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from central contracts?

Ishan Kishan has not been playing for India since he opted out of the Test series against South Africa initially citing mental fatigue. However, it turned out that issue is bit different than initially anticipated and it seemed that Ishan Kishan was not interested in playing Test cricket and wanted to prepare for IPL instead.

Shreyas Iyer, on the other hand, was dropped after the second England Test at Vizag and it was expected that he will play for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy after that. However, the cricketer ignored the Ranji game and it led to speculations that both Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan will have to pay the price for their unwanted act.

Staying true to those reports, BCCI have now taken a tough action against both the players for arguably prioritizing IPL over Test cricket and have sent a strong message in Indian cricketing circles.

Rohit Sharma too made an indirect remark on the likes of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer after India's fourth Test win against England, stating that people who don't have hunger to play Test cricket won't be selected.

Shreyas Iyer is likely to now play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semifinal but BCCI clearly isn't happy with the behaviour of both the players and it would be interesting to see how this whole saga unfolds with IPL less than a month away.
