Australia, reigning World Cup winners, lost a home ODI series against Pakistan after 22 long years and the shocking defeat resulted in endless criticism from fans and cricket experts. However, former Australian captain Tim Paine didn’t agree with the public outrage, which he believes is over exaggeration.

Despite winning the series opener at MCG by 2-wickets, Australia lost momentum in the remainder of the ODI series against Pakistan. Haris Rauf single handedly destroyed the hosts with the ball whereas Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique knitted two big partnerships to clinch the historic series.

Meanwhile, Australia, the 2023 ODI World Cup winner has received several criticisms for not being competitive with a team that seems on rebuilding phase. However, the former Australian captain, Tim Paine defended Aussies during this tricky time. Speaking with SEN Tassie, Paine stated he gets annoyed by the overreaction but more so with the established cricket analysts who coincidentally happened to be in the commentary panel.

"That annoyed me. People were saying, ‘Oh, I can't believe how bad the Australian cricket team are,' and these are cricket commentators—world-class commentators—saying, ‘I can't believe what I'm watching; this is the World Cup holders'. But it's not. The World Cup holders are sitting on the couch getting ready for a Test series," he said.

He said that players like Travis Head, Mitch Marsh, Josh Hazlewood, and a few others were not available as they were preparing for the Test series against India. Paine was very candid and stated that the team which went out on to the field was not at all the World Cup winning squad but a mix of emerging young players who were gaining precious experience. He urged critics to relax and be patient with the team’s development.

“We're blooding some youth to give them experience at the international level whilst the big boys get ready for two hugely important series – one in Test cricket and one in white-ball. Relax. It's okay,” Paine added.

Aussies fail to score a single fifty vs Pakistan

In a series ruled by bowlers, Australia landed on the wrong side of history. Pakistan bowlers disallowed any Australian batter to score a fifty in the entirety of the 3-game series which is an unwanted record the hosts set for themselves. This is the first time in Australia’s rich cricketing history that no batter manages to score a minimum of 50 runs in an ODI series.
