Former India captain, Sunil Gavaskar, has stated that another Indian Premier League (IPL) season will be played before the next T20I World Cup, and talk about Virat Kohli's place in the Indian T20I side should depend upon his form at that point.

Kohli had a terrific season for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), scoring 639 runs in 14 matches, which included 6 fifties and two back-to-back hundreds. The former India skipper is the third highest run-getter in the ongoing IPL, and has rejuvenated his T20 career.

After India's humiliating exit in the T20 World Cup last year, there were speculations that the senior players - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be asked to step aside from the shortest format of the game, in order to prolong their ODI and Test career.

However, Kohli's scintillating form in T20s has once again ignited the discussion and Sunil Gavaskar had shed his view points on the same.

Here's what Gavaskar said:

“The next T20 World Cup will be played in 2024. There will be another IPL before that in March-April. His form should be observed at that point. There is no point talking about it now. If we are talking about an upcoming T20 international, say India are playing a match in June, then he definitely fits into the team, the kind of form that he has shown."

However, Gavaskar added that if the T20 World Cup took place next month, Kohli will definitely be in the scheme of things, considering the golden run of form that he has shown in IPL.

"Virat would definitely be in my T20I team on current form for India’s upcoming matches in the format. He has scored two hundreds [in IPL 2023]. Hitting two hundreds… in T20 cricket, even scoring 50 is difficult. This great batter has notched up two hundreds."

Despite Kohli's valiant effort, RCB failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs and finished at the sixth position in the points table.
