Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) face off against five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in the eliminator clash of the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This do-or-die encounter is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai at 7.30 PM IST. The Super Giants defeated MI when both sides met each other in the only league meeting in Lucknow. However, before this knockout game goes live, here is a look at the LSG vs MI head-to-head record.

After regular skipper KL Rahul got injured and got ruled out of the competition, all-rounder Kruna Pandya took over and has done an excellent job until now. The Super Giants played 14 games in the league phase, won 8, and lost 5. Their one encounter with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ended with no result. They finished third in the table with 17 points and a net run rate of +0.284.

In a must-win game, LSG beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by a narrow margin of just one run in Match No. 68 in Kolkata. 

KKR skipper Nitish Rana won the toss and elected to field first. Quinton de Kock and Prerak Mankad scored 28 and 26 runs, respectively, while Ayush Badoni scored 25 off 21. But Nicholas Pooran played a vital knock as he smashed 58 off just 30 with four fours and five sixes. Courtesy of the West Indian, the visitors reached a competitive total of 176/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Vaibhav Arora, Shardul Thakur and Sunil Narine picked up two wickets each for the Knight Riders. 

In reply, openers Jason Roy and Venkatesh Iyer struck 45 and 24 runs, respectively. But the star of the tournament so far, Rinku Singh, threatened LSG right till the end. The left-hander slammed an unbeaten 67 off just 33 with six fours and four maximums but couldn't take his side over the line. However, the Super Giants survived Rinku's blitz innings to seal the deal and qualify for the playoffs. For his game-changing knock, Pooran won the Player of the Match award.


MI in IPL 2023

The most successful side in the competition's history, MI left it late but finally managed to seal the top 4 spots. They played 14 matches with eight victories and six losses to grab the number four place in the table. 

MI Last Match in IPL 2023

MI faced Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their last league stage game in Mumbai. In a crunch and must-win encounter, the home side beat the Orange Army by eight wickets courtesy of a splendid ton from Cameron Green.

Captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first. Openers Mayank Agarwal and Vivrant Sharma smashed 83 and 69 runs, respectively, as the visitors posted a massive total of 200/5 on the board. Pacer Akash Madhwal was the standout performer for MI as he picked up four wickets for 37 runs in his 4-over spell.

Chasing 201, Rohit led his side from the front and slammed 56 off 37. But Green stole the show by hitting a magnificent 100* off just 47, which included eight fours and as many maximums. Courtesy of his knock, the home side reached their target in 18 overs. For his maiden T20 hundred, Green won the Player of the Match award.

As mentioned above, LSG locked horns with MI in Match No. 63 in Lucknow, where they defeated MI by a margin of 5 runs.

Rohit won the toss, and his side decided to bowl first. Wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock made 16 while his opening partner Deepak Hooda got dismissed for just 5. Skipper Krunal Pandya played a crucial inning of 49 before he got retired hurt. It was all about Aussie all-rounder Marcus Stoitnis then, as he registered his highest IPL score of 89* off just 47 with four fours and eight towering sixes. Courtesy of his brutal hitting, the home side reached 177/3 in their allotted 20 overs. Seamer Jason Behrendorff was the pick of the MI bowlers for his spell of 2/30 (4).

In reply, Ishan Kishan smashed 59 off 39, while Rohit scored 37 off 25. Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera amassed 7 and 16 runs, respectively, while Tim David remained not out on 32 off just 19. The Australian should have taken his side over the line as the visitors fell just short of their target. Yash Thakur and Ravi Bishnoi picked up two wickets each for the Super Giants. For his solid innings, Stoinis grabbed the Player of the Match award.
