Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has backed Pat Cummins and Co. to achieve the unthinkable in India and claim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023. Gilchrist is the latest entrant in the bandwagon of former players who expect the current Australian side consisting of Cummins, David Warner, Steve Smith, Nathan Lyon, and others to clinch the series.

Gilchrist captained Australia to their last Test series win in India back in 2004, in absence of regular skipper Ricky Ponting.

Speaking to AAP, the 51-year-old pointed out similarities between both the current and 2004 sides, which include tours to other subcontinental countries prior to India tour.

"There's not going to be anything easy and it's not going to be a walk in the park, but it is their best chance and I expect them to do really, really well. The balance of current squad and how experienced the team is now is important."

The former Punjab Kings player also urged team management to play Cameron Green as a pure batter in the XI.

Speaking of team combinations, Australia will head into the first Test without the services of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, while India finds the likes of Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah missing from their squad.

The first of four Tests starts on Thursday in Nagpur.
