The excitement around the Delhi Premier League (DPL) is building up once again as the tournament gears up for its second season. This year, the league is set to become even bigger and better, with the addition of two new teams confirmed by the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA).
The tournament is expected to begin in the last week of July, and the much-anticipated player auction will be held on July 5, 2025, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
DPL Returns With Two New Teams For Season 2
In the inaugural season, the DPL featured six teams. However, the 2025 edition will now see a total of eight franchises competing for the title. The two new teams, Outer Delhi Warriors and New Delhi Tigers, will join the existing six: North Delhi Strikers, Central Delhi Kings, Purani Dilli, West Delhi Lions, East Delhi Riders, and South Delhi Superstarz.
With more teams and more talent entering the mix, the upcoming season promises to be even more competitive and entertaining.
Ahead of the auction, each franchise was allowed to retain one player from their previous squad. This move gives teams a chance to keep their core intact while planning their auction strategy around a key figure. The retained players include some exciting names.
Retained Players For DPL 2025
Team | Player Retained |
New Delhi Tigers | Himmat Singh (Draft) |
Purani Dilli | Rishabh Pant |
North Delhi Strikers | Harshit Rana |
South Delhi Superstarz | Ayush Badoni |
Outer Delhi Warriors | Priyansh Arya (Draft) |
East Delhi Riders | Anuj Rawat |
West Delhi Lions | Ayush Doseja |
Central Delhi Kings | Jonty Sidhu |
The Mega Auction will be conducted on July 5, starting at 10 AM IST, and will be streamed live on FanCode. Each team will head into the auction with a purse of INR 1.5 crore. Teams will have the opportunity to build their squads from scratch while being allowed to use one Right-to-Match (RTM) card.
The DPL has also introduced a clear categorization of players this year, dividing them into three groups: Category A for senior players, including those with IPL or state-level experience; Category B for Under-23 and Under-19 players; and Category C for young talents under 16.
Importantly, only players registered with the DDCA are eligible to be part of the auction pool. While the current retention policy allows a team to retain up to four players, every franchise has decided to keep just one so far, perhaps saving room for strategic picks during the auction.
