Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Friday, July 4.

Siraj And Akash Deep Ensure India Takes Big Lead Despite Brook, Smith Tons

Mohammed Siraj picked up the big wickets of Joe Root and Ben Stokes earlier on Day 3 of the second Test in Birmingham to pile on England’s misery. Centurions Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, however, crafted a record-breaking 303-run partnership to extend England’s total from a precarious 84-5 to a commanding 387-6. Siraj later returned to mop up the English tail, completing a sensational six-fer in the process (6-70). Akash Deep got rid of Brook and Chris Woakes to claim figures of 4-88.

Emboldened with a 180-run lead, India reached 64-1 from 13 overs by stumps, with KL Rahul and Karun Nair batting at the crease.

Harry Brook And Jamie Smith Shatter Big Records

Harry Brook and Jamie Smith shattered some huge records through the course of their 303-run partnership in nearly 61 overs against India on Day 3 of the Birmingham Test. Joining forces at 84-5, the two cricketers plundered majestic centuries to take England to 387-6. Their partnership marked England’s third highest for any wicket against India, second highest for the sixth wicket in Tests regardless of the opposition or venue, and the third highest for any wicket by an English pair in Birmingham.

Hazlewood Strikes On Day 2 After Alzarri Completes Four

Alzarri Joseph completed a four-wicket haul late on Day 1 to shoot out the Australians for 286 in 66.5 overs. Beau Webster and Alex Carey both cracked attacking 60s for the visitors after they had slipped to 110-5 at one stage.

In response, West Indies reached 110-3 by the time of Lunch on Day 3. Opening batter Kraigg Brathwaite was dismissed for an eight-ball duck by Josh Hazlewood, before Pat Cummins snared a blinder to get rid of Keacy Carty. Brandon King composed a cunning half-century to take West Indies past the 100-run mark. Hazlewood also caught home captain Roston Chase plumb in front shortly after the lunch break to pick up his second wicket of the innings.
