India’s 2036 Olympic Bid In Jeopardy Due To Internal Conflict; IOC Raise Red Flags

India’s hopes of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad have hit a major hurdle. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has raised three big concerns that must be fixed before India can move forward seriously with its bid.

Earlier, cricket was added as a one-time event at the LA 2028 Olympics. This decision, made by the LA 2028 organising committee, was seen as a strategic move to win India’s support and boost the country’s interest in the Olympic Games.

Despite India’s continuous efforts to host the mega event, the IOC committee had reportedly identified certain red flags.

IOC Likely To Block India’s Bid To Host Olympics

According to reports from The Indian Express, IOC officials pointed out that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is facing serious governance issues.

These include financial mismanagement, unpaid bills, and internal disagreements between IOA President PT Usha and other members. The IOC had even stopped giving financial support to the IOA last year due to these problems.

“It has been communicated very candidly that while India can continue preparing for its bid to host future Olympics, the country has to address these issues first. This was, in a nutshell, the big takeaway from this meeting,” a source said.

Secondly, the IOC is concerned about India’s poor record in doping. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has ranked India among the top countries for drug violations in sports.

India’s performance at the Olympics recently has been horrendous. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, India received only 6 medals, without a gold medal, earning 71st place overall. With the world's largest population, India has not been able to win Olympic sports consistently.

The Ahmedabad bid was expected to be strong, especially with the support of top IOC officials and cricket being added to the LA 2028 Olympics. However, until India fixes these key issues, governance, doping, and performance, the IOC says serious talks about hosting the Games cannot move forward.
