The rise of Washington Sundar has been like no other. Injuries might have troubled him, but the allrounder has proved himself time and again by showcasing some stellar performances in his career thus far.

An allrounder of Sundar's calibre, who can bowl at any state and gives confidence as a batter, is find to get; and the buzz around him has gotten twice it was after he played an astounding knock of 51 against Zealand - when India were in trouble in Christchurch.

According to former Indian cricketer Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, who comes from Sundar's state, the allrounder can be utilised as an allrounder alongside Hardik Pandya.

“Both (Hardik and Washington) of them would fit in really well because they can both bat and bowl as well. One of them can be used as the fifth bowling option or they can even share ten overs because they can contribute with the bat as well. Washington Sundar is a treasure we have unearthed and we need to preserve and make it mature," the former leg-spinner said to IANS.

“Sundar can be trained to bat at number five or six because he is somebody who can pace an innings," he added. "He’s not a slogger, can pace the innings and in 50-overs."

The 23-year-old played the innings of his life on his debut at Brisbane. His 62 against a lethal Australian bowling lineup not only revived India from 161-5 but helped them win a historic match and a series Down Under.

“We have seen this in performances when the other batters found it difficult to bat and he was batting easily. It shows the difference in the calibre of Washington Sundar and the other people who were looking to bat. He’s a high-quality player, but needs to field better,"  Sivaramakrishnan further commented.

"He’s looking in real good shape and mentally strong. Once you are mentally strong and very fit, your confidence automatically goes up."

After a successful New Zealand tour, Sundar could wear the Indian blues in the first ODI match against Bangladesh, starting from Sunday.
