Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup plans seems to have taken another hit following their opening defeat to Namibia. Despite registering an emphatic 79-run win against the UAE in their subsequent fixture, Lankan speedster Dushmantha Chameera succumbed to an injury and was forced to pull out off his final over.

The cricketer had only recently recovered from his ankle injury, which prompted him to miss Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup 2022 triumphant run in the UAE last month.

After the match, Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood said that the team management will be keeping an eye on Chameera’s health updates. He also added that they will be decide on the cricketer’s fate in the tournament after receiving a go-ahead from the medical team.

Silverwood said:

“Obviously, we need to keep an eye on him. The medical team will be watching him overnight, then potentially having a scan tomorrow and we'll make a plan from there, really. But let's get all the information in first and find out exactly where we're at and we'll have to make a plan.”

Sri Lanka will now face the Netherlands in Geelong on October 20. The match marks the final opening round fixture for both sides. Sri Lanka, under Dasun Shanaka, needs to win the contest with a big margin in order to stay in contention for the Super 12 round.
