On Thursday, May 8, the IPL 2025 match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at the Dharamsala Stadium was suspend mid-match due to security reasons. The stadium was timely evacuated and the IPL governing body took a decision to suspend the league for a week due to the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

At present, the recent update regarding the IPL is that the players have returned home, while arrangements are being made for a secure travel of foreign stars to their homes. Meanwhile, there is no clarity over the resumption of the league, but reports suggest that few cities in India have been shortlisted. Further, a few overseas boards have also expressed to host IPL on a foreign soil.

While there are possibilities that the remainder of the league might happen outside India, lets look at how many times has the league moved out of the country.

Has IPL Ever Taken Place Out Of India?

IPL 2009: The 2nd edition of the IPL took place in South Africa from April 18 to May 24. The league had to move out of the country because of it overlapping with the 2009 Lok Sabha Elections. Thus, the police failed to ensure and provide sufficient security for the league.

IPL 2014: The 7th edition of the IPL took place in India and UAE. Again due to the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, the league was shifted out of India for the first half. Notably, the league took place from April 16 to June 1.

The first 20 matches of the league were played in UAE, which were hosted by Sharjah, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi.

IPL 2020: The 13th edition of the league was held entirely in UAE. Notably, due to the sudden outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic, the league could not be held in India and the BCCI decided to move to UAE, where Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Dubai were the three hosts.

IPL 2021: Amid the coronavirus threat, the league started in India in April, but due to the increase in COVID-19 outbreak, the league was suspended and it was resumed in the 2nd half of the year that took place in UAE.
