Veteran all-rounder Sammy-Jo Johnson has inked a two-year deal with the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) club the Sydney Thunder, ensuring she stays there until the 2024 edition. The 29-year-old moved to Thunder from the Brisbane Heat in 2020, after featuring across five seasons with them.

In her first season with the Thunder, Johnson made her mark, picking up 22 wickets and scoring 108 runs coming lower down the order. Overall, in 90 WBBL matches, she has 85 wickets and 671 runs.

She played for the Trent Rockets in the inaugural Women's Hundred, managing 120 runs and 15 wickets. However, she missed playing the second edition of the 100-ball tournament to solely focus on WBBL.

Johnson expressed her delight to extend her stay with the club while confirming that she has several offers from rivals club, which she rejected without any doubt.

Here's how Johnson reacted to her signing

"I’m stoked, I’m bloody stoked. I love everything Sydney Thunder stands for. I love its connection to the community, and I love that we represent the western suburbs – I have been a ‘westie’ since I came down from Queensland, and I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

"Some other clubs came knocking - nipping at the ankles - but I shut that down quite quickly. I had no plans to leave Sydney Thunder and my teammates."

The Thunder kick off their WBBL 08 campaign on October 14 against the Hobart Hurricanes.
