The third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will have a delayed start and will be played in December this year.

LPL 2022 was scheduled to be played in August. However, the economic crisis in the Island country has forced the tournament to be postponed.

Earlier this year, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) also confirmed its inability to host the Asia Cup in the country, which resulted in the shifting of the tournament to the UAE.

A five-team tournament was won by the Jaffna Kings in the 2021 edition, under the leadership of veteran all-rounder Thisara Perera.

"It's my pleasure to announce that the LPL will be held from 6th to 23rd December," LPL organiser Samantha Dodanwela told the media.

LPL 2022 Draft Process

The LPL 2022 Draft took place last month, which witnessed the participation of 353 players, including 180 overseas and 173 Sri Lanka players.

The key foreign players, which got picked were Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs, Janneman Malan, Carlos Brathwaite and Ben Cutting.

However, with the change in schedule, the tournament organizers are in a fix due to the player's availability. A fresh draft is likely to be issued or the slot of unavailable overseas players can be re-drafted soon.

Sri Lanka players to have a packed schedule

With the LPL 3 being played in December, it will be a tight schedule for the Sri Lanka cricketers. They are set to play a home Test series against West Indies in November, and will be on a Tour to India in December-January.
