Shubman Gill notched up his second successive century to command India’s batting might against England on Day 1 of the Birmingham Test. Sri Lanka crushed Bangladesh to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. In other news, India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi unfurled yet another explosive knock.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Wednesday, July 2.

Shubman Gill Century, Jaiswal 87 Take India Past 300

Team India reached 310-5 from 85 overs on Day 1 of the second Test against England in Birmingham. Yashasvi Jaiswal composed a cracking 87 from 107 balls before falling to Ben Stokes. English paceman Chris Woakes picked up two wickets for the hosts, including the prized scalp of KL Rahul to claim figures of 2-59. Shubman Gill packed the biggest punch for Team India by bringing up his seventh Test century and his second of the series, scoring 114* from 216 balls.

The right-hander shared a 99-run unbeaten partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (41*) to extend India’s total from 211-5 to 310-5.

Asalanka Ton, Hasaranga’s Four-Fer Take SL 1-0 Up Vs BAN

Sri Lanka crushed Bangladesh by 77 runs in Colombo to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Batting first, Sri Lanka made 244 in 49 overs, largely owing to a captain’s knock from Charith Asalanka. The cricketer composed 106 runs from 123 balls with six fours and four sixes to rescue his team from a precarious 29-3 at one stage. For Bangladesh, fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed (4-47) and Tanzim Hasan Sakib (3-45) picked up seven wickets between them.

Chasing 245, Bangladesh reached a confident 100-1 with a run-a-ball 62 from opener Tanzid Hasan. Jaker Ali also clubbed 51 runs from 64 balls at number seven. However, Sri Lankan spinners Wanindu Hasaranga (4-10) and Kamindu Mendis (3-19) ran through the Bangladeshi line-up to fold them up for just 167 in 35.5 overs.

No Ngidi, Maharaj Out; Mulder To Lead As SA Name XI For 2nd Test

South Africa’s stand-in captain Keshav Maharaj has been ruled out of the playing XI for his team’s upcoming second Test match against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo later this week. The cricketer sustained a left groin strain during the first Test, thus paving way for Senuran Muthusamy as his replacement for the upcoming series decider. The South African team management also named all-rounder Wiaan Mulder as new national captain for the second Test.

Lungi Ngidi, who was scheduled to link up with the squad, has also been released in a bid to give fast bowlers from the first Test another opportunity. South Africa won the series opener by 328 runs back on July 1.

Rishabh Pant, Travis Head Earn ICC Rankings Boost

Rishabh Pant rose to number six on the latest ICC rankings among men’s Test batters, leapfrogging South African captain Temba Bavuma in the process. Pant joined Yashasvi Jaiswal, ranked number four, as one of only two Indian cricketers on the top 10 ICC batting charts.

Australian batter Travis Head became the biggest benefactor on the latest rankings by gaining three rungs to storm into the top 10. The firebrand cricketer plundered scores of 59 and 61 for Australia in their huge win over West Indies a few days ago.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Chouhan Blank England Under-19

India Under-19 pipped their English counterparts by four wickets in a 40-overs third Youth ODI to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. For England Under-19, opener BJ Dawkins scored a near run-a-ball 62 while captain Thomas Rew bludgeoned 76 from just 44 balls with nine fours and three sixes as the hosts reached a commanding 268-6. India’s Kanishk Chouhan unfurled the spell of the high-scoring innings with tight figures of 3-30.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi led India’s response with an explosive 31-ball 86, with number three Vihaan Malhotra making 46 runs from 34 balls. Kanishk Chouhan (43* off 42) and RS Ambrish (31* off 30) anchored the India Under-19 run-chase with a 75-run partnership towards the end.
