The upcoming BPL Draft has been officially postponed, with organizers confirming that it will not take place before October. The delay follows the expiration of all previous Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise contracts after the last season.
New BPL Governing Council Chairman Mahbub Anam shared that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is preparing to invite fresh Expressions of Interest (EOI) for team ownership on a five-year basis. The BCB is also reviewing global franchise league structures to enhance the BPL’s operational quality.
New BPL Franchises To Queue In August
Mahbub Anam, in a recent media interaction, confirmed the delayed date for the BPL draft and revealed the reason behind the delay.
“We are hoping that in August we will be starting the process of taking in new franchises. In September we have a schedule to appoint these new franchises... I believe the draft will not take place before October. If we can complete our schedules then in October we can go for draft,” Mahbub said, as quoted by The Daily Star.
BCB Plans to Appoint Sports Management Firm
Regarding the overhaul of BPL, Mahbub added that a professional sports management company will soon be brought on board to assist with structuring and execution.
“We are also studying how the different franchise tournaments are being run... We will go to a tender process for event management or sports management company. They will give us direction, structure our financial model so that it's sustainable,” Mahbub said.
In parallel, the BCB will begin an audit of international venues such as Bogura and Khulna, with their inclusion in the next season of BPL contingent upon meeting standards set in coordination with the National Sports Council (NSC).
Hence, the BPL Draft date remains tentative but is expected to be scheduled in October once franchise allocations and venue evaluations are completed.
