South African umpire Rudi Koertzen passes away at the age of 73

In what is a sad development, Rudi Koertzen has passed away in an unfortunate car crash at the age of 73. The South African umpire had officiated in 331 games and his absence will surely be felt by the cricketing fraternity.

According to emerging reports, the South African national side will be seen wearing black bands against England in the upcoming Test series to honor the late personality.

Koertzen started officiating international games back in 1992 and became a full time ICC umpire in 1997. He was nominated for the ICC umpire of the Year award in 2005 and 2006, but finished third on both occasions behind Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar. Koertzen was famous for slowly raising his finger while declaring a dismissal.
