'When it rains, it pours' - New Zealand cricket team and especially left-handed batsman Henry Nicholls learned it the hard way on the first afternoon of the Leeds Test after Jack Leach dismissed the southpaw through one of the most bizarre dismissals in the history of this sport.

It all happened on the 2nd delivery of the 56th over of BlackCaps innings when Nicholls shimmied down the track to drill a full-delivery from the left-arm orthodox straight down the ground.

The only problem was that non-striker Daryl Mitchell could not get his bat out of the way. So the ball proceeded to hit the sweet spot of his bat, lobbed over umpire Richard Kettlebrough, who tried to get out of the way, before landing safely into Alex Lees' hands at mid-off, leaving everyone stunned.

Nicholls' freakish dismissal pretty much summed up New Zealand's fortunes in the 2nd session and the tour in general as the reigning WTC champions succumbed to 123/5.

England bowlers continued the good work they had done in the morning session as they played on New Zealand batters' patience via disciplined line and lengths.

They ultimately reaped its reward as Devon Conway (26 off 62 deliveries) ran out of patience and chased a wide one from Jamie Overton to give the pacer his maiden Test wicket.

The in-form Mitchell added another 40 runs with Nicholls, who stroked just 1 four during his 99-ball 19 in just over 22 overs.

Mitchell is currently batting on 27, and once again, the onus will be on him and keeper Tom Blundell to dig their team out of the hole when play resumes after Tea.

The duo have done it twice this series, and the Kiwis will hope they repeat the same here as they battle to save themselves from the ignominy of a 0-3 whitewash.
