Shreyas Iyer once again failed to justify his return to the Indian team as he fell for just seven against Sri Lanka in the second ODI of the three-match series in Colombo on August 4.

Batting at number six in a chase of 241, the cricketer scored one boundary before he was caught plumbed in front of stumps by rampaging Sri Lankan spinner Jeffrey Vandersay.

Iyer’s dismissal continued Team India’s dramatic batting collapse that was initiated by the sudden exits of well-set openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.

Shreyas Iyer fails yet again on Indian return

Shreyas Iyer, who failed to make a cut into the Indian team for the 2024 T20 World Cup in June, received a call-up to the national setup for the subsequent ODI series in Sri Lanka.

After scoring just 23 in the series-opener in Colombo, Iyer fell for a sluggish seven from nine balls in front of Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay.

The 29-year-old initially made his way to the crease following the dismissal of Virat Kohli at 123-4.

Aiming to lead Indian recovery alongside KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer was caught plumbed in front of stumps by Vandersay a couple of overs later as India crashed further at 133-5.

Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka piled up a competitive 240-9 from 50 overs on a turning R. Premadasa surface in Colombo.

Opening batter Avishka Fernando and number eight Kamindu Mendis top-scored with 40 runs each, while Dunith Wellalage produced a rapid 39.

For India, spinners Washington Sundar picked up three wickets at the expense of just 30 runs from 10 overs. Kuldeep Yadav also chipped in with two while Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel claimed a wicket each.
