Shubman Gill made his way back to the sheds shortly after the dismissal of senior opening partner and captain Rohit Sharma. The young opener belted 35 runs from 44 balls with three impudent boundaries before an ambitious driving attempt over to the off-side accounted for his downfall.

Turning up for Team India in Colombo for the second ODI match against Sri Lanka, Shubman Gill’s dismissal at the hands of spinner Jeffrey Vandersay initiated a dramatic top-order collapse for the hosts.

Chasing 241 runs for a win, Shubman Gill shared 97 runs for the opening wicket with captain and half-centurion Rohit Sharma.

However, he made his way back to the sheds shortly after the dismissal of Sharma, with both falling victims to the spinning web spread out by Sri Lankan spinner Jeffrey Vandersay.

After racing to 35 off 43 balls, the young Indian opener attempted to crash Vandersay’s turning delivery on to his off-side. However, the cricketer merely managed to get a thick edge as the ball went flying towards Kamindu Mendis at first slip.

Mendis, in response, outstretched his right hand to grab the ball from behind him as India slipped to 116-2 in 17.1 overs.

Following the dismissal of Shubman Gill, Jeffrey Vandersay also steamrolled the Indian middle-order to bag six wickets in just his first seven overs at the expense of 26 runs.

Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka listed 240-9 from 50 overs on a turning wicket. Opener Avishka Fernando and number eight Kamindu Mendis top-scored with 40 runs each while Washington Sundar struck thrice in 10 overs for Team India.
