A rampaging Rohit Sharma fell victim to his own audacity after his impudent reverse-sweep went awry against Sri Lanka. Opening the innings for Team India in a chase of 241, Sharma bludgeoned five boundaries and four sixes to whack 64 runs and shared a 97-run first-wicket stand with Shubman Gill.

However, Sharma’s relentless quest of runs came to a halt in front of Jeffrey Vandersay and Pathum Nissanka in the 14th over of the Indian innings.

Chasing 241, Indian captain and opener Rohit Sharma flogged five boundaries and four sixes to produce 64 runs from 44 balls. Setting up a strong Indian foundation in the run-chase, Sharma’s relentless quest of quick runs prompted him to thwack Sri Lankan spinner Jeffrey Vandersay with a reverse-sweep.

However, the legendary Indian opener misread the line and ended up being deceived by Vandersay’s extra bounce. Sharma’s attempted reverse-sweep merely induced a top-edge towards backward point, where an incoming Pathum Nissanka grabbed the dipping ball with an agile dive.

Regardless, the innings marked Rohit Sharma’s second half-century in succession and the 57th of his glittering ODI career.

Despite Sharma’s batting blitz at the top, Team India had their entire top-order blown away shortly after his dismissal, as the visitors slipped from 97-0 to 123-4 in a space of just six overs.

Earlier in the match, Indian bowlers Washington Sundar (3/30) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/33) restricted Sri Lanka to 240-9 from 50 overs. Avishka Fernando and Kamindu Mendis top-scored for the hosts with 40 runs each.
