Ajinkya Rahane led Mumbai to its 42nd Ranji Trophy title by defeating Vidarbha in a high-octane final earlier this year. In a recent development, Rahane is set to continue as Mumbai captain for their upcoming 2024-25 Irani Trophy match against Rest of India, as confirmed by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

The senior Indian Test cricketer is currently in England, where he is plying his trade for Leicestershire in the ongoing Royal London One Day Cup 2024 season.

While speaking with Mid-Day, MCA Chairman Sanjay Patil confirmed that Ajinkya Rahane will indeed be leading the Mumbai team at the upcoming 2024 Irani Cup match against Rest of India.

However, Patil further claimed that fellow Indian Test player Sarfaraz Khan is another option for consideration if Rahane remains unavailable for the match.

Sarfaraz has already been appointed as Mumbai captain for the Buchi Babu Tournament 2024 in the absence of the 85-Test veteran.

Earlier this year, Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai defeated Vidarbha by 169 runs at the Wankhede Stadium to lift the 2024 Ranji Trophy. They will now face Rest of India for the Irani Cup 2024 between October 1 and October 5.

Apart from Rahane, the match might also feature the return of Prithvi Shaw. Much like the 36-year-old Indian batter, Shaw is also in England for the ongoing Royal London One Day Cup 2024 season, albeit as part of the Northamptonshire group.
