It was a day of contrasts for Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy encounter, a tale of two batters at opposite ends of fortune. On one side stood Ajinkya Rahane, crafting a classy century, while Sarfaraz Khan registered a rare failure.
Mumbai faced Chhattisgarh and were asked to bat first after losing the toss. However, the former had a false start, losing openers Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Musheer Khan on 9 and 12 runs, respectively.
However, veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane stood tall, scoring a stunning century. His 118 off 237 balls was a masterclass in temperament, containing 15 boundaries.
Sarfaraz Khan fails after recent India snub
After guiding Mumbai to a strong position, Ajinkya Rahane retired himself out to make way for the young stars. Siddhesh Lad scored 80 runs as Mumbai piled up 203 runs at the loss of 4 wickets.
However, amid all this, Sarfaraz Khan heavily disappointed. After getting sidelined from the India A series against South Africa, Khan was expected to score big.
But, fell for just 1 off 6 balls. For a batter who has built his reputation on piling runs at will, this failure is becoming increasingly concerning for Mumbai.
At stumps on Day 1, Mumbai had 251 runs on the board at the loss of 5 after 84 overs. Shams Mulani and Akash Anand are out there on the crease with an aim to pile up some crucial runs at the end.
For Chhattisgarh, Ravi Kiran and Aditya Sarwate picked 2 wickets each, while Ajay Mandal contributed with a solitary wicket.
Notably, Mumbai are coming off a 35-run victory against Jammu and Kashmir in their opening Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season fixture.
