Australia’s explosive opener Travis Head has achieved a major milestone in his ODI career. In the 3rd ODI against India at SCG, Head completed his 3000 ODI runs.

The dynamic left-hander achieved this feat in a relatively quicker time. It’s yet another reminder of how Head has transformed from a promising youngster into one of Australia’s most impactful limited-overs batters.

On that note, here’s a list of Australian players who took the fewest innings to complete 3000 ODI runs.

Few openers in world cricket have dominated as aggressively as David Warner. With 3000 ODI runs in 81 innings, Warner has been Australia's match-winner in crucial games. In 159 ODI innings, he scored 6932 runs at a 45.30 average with 22 centuries.

Warner's combination of power and precision has destroyed bowling attacks around the world. His statistics reveal how powerful Australia's top order has remained during the years.

George Bailey’s international career might have been shorter than some of his peers, but he made every inning count. The stylish right-hander reached 3000 ODI runs in 80 innings, thanks to his elegant strokeplay and clever manipulation of the field.

He featured in a total of 90 ODIs, with 3044 runs at an average of 40.58 and 3 centuries. Bailey was also acclaimed for his captaincy, leading Australia in a transition period and paving the way for the likes of Smith and Head to excel.

3. Michael Bevan - 80 innings

Before the likes of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, there was Michael Bevan, the original finisher. Bevan’s calmness under pressure and ability to rescue Australia from impossible situations made him a legend of the format.

Reaching 3000 runs in just 80 innings during the 1990s, when strike rates were far lower, was an incredible feat.

In his 232-game-long ODI career, Bevan hit 6912 runs at 53.58 average and 6 centuries. His legacy still continues to inspire generations of Australian cricketers.

2. Steve Smith - 79 innings

Steve Smith is perhaps most famous for his Test heroics, but his ODI career is equally impressive. Reaching 3000 runs in 79 innings, Smith has stood at the middle order of Australia for almost a decade.

His ability to adapt to any situation, be it holding on after early setbacks or going hard in the death overs, makes him one of the modern-day greats.

Till now, Steve Smith has played 170 ODIs, making 5800 runs at 43.28 average and 12 centuries. There is no doubt that Smith has been instrumental in elevating Australia as a force to be reckoned with in ODI cricket.

The emergence of Travis Head in ODI cricket has been nothing but spectacular. With his aggressive batting and explosive beginnings, he has revolutionised how Australia tackles powerplays.

From his brutal strokeplay in the 2023 World Cup final to his consistency at the top of the order, Head has become one of the deadliest openers in international cricket.

While playing in the recent ODI against India at Sydney, Head achieved 3000 ODI runs in only 76 innings, becoming the quickest Australian to do so.

What makes it even more impressive is that he’s done it while often sharing strikes with some of the best in the business, maintaining a strike rate well above 100. This is a sign that Travis Head is not just a match-winner, but he’s building a legacy.
