The Indian cricket team successfully avoided a series whitewash after beating Australia in the third ODI in Sydney by nine wickets. Former India skipper Rohit Sharma was named Player of the Match for his magnificent 121-run knock. He was well accompanied by Virat Kohli, who scored 74 runs after registering back-to-back ducks in the first and second ODIs, respectively.
Rohit Sharma hints at possible final Australia visit
Rohit smashed his 33rd ODI century during the match. Interestingly, he also scored 73 runs in the second ODI after a disappointing outing in the first match, dismissing for just eight runs. With this hundred, he also becomes only the third Indian player to score 50 international hundreds after Sachin Tendulkar (100) and Virat Kohli (82)
During one of the post-match interviews, Rohit gave a surprising statement, especially for the fans in Australia.
He said, "Don't know if we're (Rohit and Virat Kohli) coming back here (in Australia) again. Maybe this wasn't a goodbye, but those words carried the weight of a lot of emotions. And, even if this truly was their last tour of Australia, both Rohit and Kohli showed why they are considered among the best when it comes to white-ball cricket."
Rohit Sharma reflects on playing in Sydney
In the post-match presentation, Rohit discussed his return to action after a long time and mentioned that he enjoys playing in Sydney. He also recalled his initial days in the squad when seniors welcomed him. He wants to do the same with juniors now.
"That's what you expect in Australia, it's not going to be easy. You got to understand the situation. Haven't played for a long time, had a good prep coming here. We couldn't win the series, but we still take a lot of positives," he said.
"There'll be a lot of learning for the youngsters. When I came for the first time, how the seniors helped up. It's our job to pass on the message. Never easy to travel abroad and play cricket. The guys are pretty talented, you need to have game plan," he added.
Although India couldn't clinch the series, Rohit became the Player of the Series for being the highest run-scorer. Both Rohit and Kohli will now be back in action on 30th November for a three-match home ODI series against South Africa.
