In the latest development, Ajinkya Rahane has stepped down as the captain of the Mumbai team ahead of the Ranji Trophy season 2025-26. The Indian batter posted an Instagram story to reveal his decision to step down as the Mumbai skipper, keeping in mind the upcoming season.

However, he will continue to play in the side as a pure batter, and will be a silent leader as Mumbai will now look to groom a new captain before the Ranji Trophy campaign begins.
"Captaining and winning the championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honor. With the new domestic season ahead, I believe it is the right time to groom a new leader, and hence, I have decided not to continue in the captaincy role," Rahane said in an Instagram post.
"I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player, and will continue my journey with MCA to help us win more trophies, looking forward to the season," he added.
Rahane's captaincy journey with Mumbai
Ajinkya Rahane has been a stellar leader for the Mumbai domestic team and has won laurels for the most successful domestic team in India. Under his leadership, the team won the Ranji Trophy in the 2023-24 season, defeating Vidarbha in the finale.
Under his guidance, the Mumbai side also won the Irani Cup 2024-25 by defeating the Rest of India (ROI). Prior to red-ball success with Mumbai, he helped them win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022-23, and it solidified himself as one of the best captains in Indian domestic cricket.
In the upcoming domestic season, the 37-year-old batter, who is hopeful of a Test comeback will enter his 19th first-class season for Mumbai.
