Shubman Gill vs Sunil Gavaskar (Source:@ AFP and ICC,X.COM)
Shubman Gill’s rise in cricket has taken another remarkable turn, as his stats have been compared with Sunil Gavaskar. The young batter, who recently took over India’s Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma, has not just impressed with his leadership but has also been in top form with the bat.
What’s fascinating is how Gill’s first 12 innings as India’s Test captain have mirrored those of Gavaskar when he first took charge. Both players have scored five centuries in their first 12 innings as captain. However, while their run tallies are the same, their averages tell a slightly different story.

It is important to mention that Gill made his Test captaincy debut during India’s tour of England in 2025. In that series, he made 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40. The young Indian captain was in the best of his form and also scored 4 centuries in that series. This performance clearly showed that captaincy pressure has not affected Gill.
His form continued in the recently ongoing Test against West Indies, where he scored a brilliant century in India's first innings. He scored an unbeaten 129 runs off 196 balls at a strike-rate of 65.82.
In total, Gill has now played 38 Test matches, scoring 2697 runs at an average of 41.49 and a strike-rate of 61.17. He has made 9 centuries and 8 half-centuries.
After the West Indies Test, India will next travel to Australia for a white-ball series consisting of three ODIs and five T20Is. Shubman Gill will be leading the Indian side in ODIs for the first time, and it will be interesting to see how he works alongside Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom are making their comeback after breaks.
