Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has said the upcoming ODI series against Australia will be a crucial series for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The three-match series, which starts on 19 October in Perth, could decide the future of the duo in ODI cricket, especially with the 2027 World Cup still two years away.

It is important to note that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have already retired from Test and T20 formats. They now only play ODIs for India and have been named in the squad for this tour. They are expected to join the team before flying to Australia on 15 October.

Ravi Shastri also pointed out that both players (Virat and Rohit) delivered strongly during India's Champions Trophy win earlier this year. However, their recent form has been below their best, and their place in India’s long-term ODI plans is unclear.

Ex-Coach feels Kohli and Rohit must prove themselves

Speaking at the Kayo Sports Summer of Cricket launch, Ravi Shastri said both Kohli and Rohit still have a lot to offer-but they must show form, fitness, and hunger.

"That's why they're here (playing the ODI series against Australia)," Shastri was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au at Kayo Sport's Summer of Cricket launch here.

"They're part of the mix. It depends on their fitness, their hunger and, of course, form. So, I think this series is very important to see how they go. They themselves will know by the end of this series how they feel and then it's their call," he added.

Shastri also said that India is currently stronger in white-ball cricket than in the longer red-ball format. He praised the young talent coming through, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Tilak Varma.

"India is much stronger in white ball than the red ball. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli… they know that these youngsters are pushing them." Shastri said.

The upcoming ODI series against Australia will be very important for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The ODI series will start on October 19, 2025.
