Sydney Sixers all-rounder Joel Davies has found himself in the middle of controversy after an alleged “lewd celebration” during a Sydney grade cricket match on Sunday.

The 22-year-old New South Wales cricketer reportedly performed a questionable gesture after taking a wicket in a first-grade T20 clash between Sydney University and Manly Warringah.

Joel Davies to be investigated over controversial celebration

Davies, who celebrated after a stumping by wicketkeeper Jay Lenton, appeared to thrust his hips in the batter’s direction, a move that was deemed ‘lewd’ by many critics.

While umpires did not report the incident during the match, according to Fox Sports, Cricket NSW has confirmed that the player has now been reported for a suspected breach of the code of conduct.

As of now, Joel Davies has not been formally charged. But he is said to have denied any wrongdoing, saying his celebration was a tribute to NBA superstar Joel Embiid, who is routinely seen making similar hip-thrust gestures during games.

The young cricketer apparently told officials that he was not imitating a sexual act but simply expressing excitement in his own way.

Cricket NSW is expected to review the footage and statements before deciding on any disciplinary action. A breach of the code of conduct could result in anything from a warning to a suspension, depending on the findings.

Later that year, he signed a three-year contract with the Sydney Sixers. Moreover, his performances earned him a rookie contract with New South Wales in April 2024.
