Kusal Mendis Smears 84 Before Taijul’s Clean-Up Job
Resuming the innings at 290-2 on Day 3, Sri Lanka extended its first innings total to 458 from 116.5 overs to conjure a huge 211-run lead over the visitors. Overnight centurion Pathum Nissanka was dismissed by Taijul Islam earlier in the day for 158, before the Bangladeshi spinner trapped Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva plumb in front for just seven.
Nayeem Hasan cleaned up Kamindu Mendis (33) and Sonal Dinusha (11) in quick succession to claim figures of 3-87. Taijul Islam also cleaned up the Bangladeshi tail to pick 17th Test five-fer, eventually finishing with 5-131.
Jayasuriya And Dhananjaya Wreck Bangladesh
Up against a deficit of 211 runs, Bangladesh lost both openers, Anamul Haque and Shadman Islam to Asitha Fernando and Prabath Jayasuriya respectively by the time of reaching just 31. Mominul Haque at number three and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also failed to lead Bangladesh to recovery by getting toppled early by Dhananjaya de Silva.
Tottering at 70-4, Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored for the visitors with a mere 26. However, the senior man had his well-set stay halted by Jayasuriya. Tharindu Ratnayake trapped Mehidy Hasan Miraz in front as Bangladesh reached 115-6 from 38.4 overs by stumps on Day 3.
