Just five days after walking off the pitch one final time in Galle, Angelo Mathews is back doing what he loves: watching Test cricket. But this time, he has swapped the Lankan whites for a casual tee and the dressing room for the sidelines.

Angelo Mathews Turned Spectator Days After Ending His Test Career

It hasn’t even been a week since Angelo Mathews said goodbye to the longest format, but here he is, at Colombo’s SSC, soaking in the action between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. And by the looks of it, Angie seems just as invested with shades on and smile intact.

Honestly, it’s like he never left. He may not be padding up anymore, but he is still in the thick of it, feeling every run, every wicket and probably whispering advice in his head as the game unfolds.

Mathews called time on his red-ball career on June 21, 2025, after playing his final Test at Galle. The match ended in a draw, but his numbers will forever scream greatness: 119 Tests, 8,200+ runs, a double ton to his name and plenty of overs bowled with heart and hustle. The man was the backbone of Sri Lanka’s Test side for over a decade.

He might not be facing the ball anymore, but don’t be fooled, Mathews hasn’t distanced himself from the game one bit. Cricket is in his blood and you can’t just pull the plug on that.

Sri Lanka Bossing It Without Mathews

While Mathews chilled in the stands, Sri Lanka looked in control on Day 2 of the Colombo Test. After bundling out Bangladesh for 247, the home side reached 203/1 in just 55.3 overs, trailing by just 44 runs at the time of writing this article.

Pathum Nissanka was the star of the show, notching up an unbeaten century, while Chandimal added a stylish 59* to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Lahiru Udara chipped in with a solid 40 at the top before falling to Taijul Islam. But from there on, it was cruise control. The Tigers’ bowling looked toothless and Sri Lanka look set to bat big.

What’s Next For Angelo Mathews?

With Test cricket behind him, Mathews is now setting his sights on white-ball glory. He is not done just yet. The 2026 T20 World Cup is on the horizon and Mathews wants to be in the thick of that battle.

But seeing him back in the stands so soon tells you everything you need to know: Test cricket runs deep in his veins. Whether he is playing it or watching it, he just can’t stay away.
