In recent news, South Africa (SA) have confirmed their playing XI for the first Test against Zimbabwe (ZIM), which begins on June 28 at the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo. It is important to note that the Proteas will be without their regular Test captain, Temba Bavuma, who has been ruled out of the series due to a left hamstring injury.
Bavuma recently led South African side to their maiden ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title win against Australia. It is worth noting that he will be replaced by experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj, who steps in as captain for the series.
A notable highlight of the XI is the much-anticipated debut of 21-year-old batting sensation Dewald Brevis. Known for his explosive stroke play in white-ball cricket, Brevis is set to make his red-ball debut.
Dewald Brevis To Make His Debut
In Bavuma’s absence, the Proteas will field a relatively inexperienced side. It is likely expected that Matthew Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi will open the innings, forming a new partnership at the top, as senior openers like Aiden Markram also miss out.
The middle order will feature wicketkeeper-batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius and debutant Brevis, alongside David Bedingham and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder. The lower middle order includes Kyle Verreynne and Maharaj himself, with the latter expected to play a dual role as captain and lead spinner.
All-rounder Corbin Bosch, who provides additional depth with both bat and ball, also finds a place in the starting lineup. The pace attack, though relatively raw, features Codi Yusuf and Kwena Maphaka, who will be supported by the experienced Wiaan Mulder and Corbin Bosch.
Senior players such as Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi have been rested.
