Despite having a dominating start, Team India faced a disappointing defeat against England and faced harsh criticism. As the cricket world is pointing out the defeat, head coach Gautam Gambhir’s role has come under scrutiny.
As questions are being raised on Gambhir’s future as Team India’s head coach, former English bowler Monty Panesar backed him, saying Gambhir deserves more time to evolve the team in his vision.
Monty Panesar Says Gambhir Deserves More Time To Build Indian Team
After Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement from the longest format, Team India entered a new era. But the beginning didn’t unfold as desired. Even after early dominance, Team India faced a disappointing 5-wicket defeat in the first Test match against England. After that, head coach Gautam Gambhir faced backlash.
Gambhir’s future as Team India’s head coach is under scrutiny as some experts have raised concerns over that. However, Speaking to the InsideSport, former England spinner Monty Panesar came out in support of Gambhir, stating that he needs time to rebuild the team, especially with several senior players no longer in the side.
“Gautam Gambhir should be given at least 12-18 months to develop this young Test squad. Gambhir is without the likes of Kohli and Sharma. You can not expect him to win the Test series against England without experienced players,” Panesar said.
Gambhir’s Test Record As Head Coach Raises Eyebrows
After the T20 World Cup 2024, Gautam Gambhir became Rahul Dravid’s successor and stepped in as Team India’s head coach. Even after the white-ball success, Gambhir’s success in the longest format has become a concern. In 11 matches, Team India faced 7 humiliating defeats and registered just 3 victories.
A whitewash on home soil against New Zealand and a horrific defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy deepened the woes. For the first time in the WTC cycle, Team India failed to qualify for the final. With the ongoing series against England starting on a sour note, the pressure is mounting and concerns are growing louder.
