England beat India by 5 wickets to win the first Test of the 5-game series in Headingley, Leeds. On Day 5, the hosts were asked to chase down 371 runs. Ben Duckett scored 149, followed by a half-century each from Zak Crawley and Joe Root. Indian seamers failed to pose a challenge as England took home a comfortable win to lead 1-0.

Here's how Day 5 of first Test between England and India panned out in Leeds:

Ben Duckett-Zak Crawley Dominate With Big Partnership

At 21/0, overnight batters for England Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley walked out to bat on Day 5 to chase a total of 371 runs. Both openers not only survived the new ball challenge but also dominated Indian seamers. Even Jasprit Bumrah, who grabbed a fifer in the second inning, was ineffective.

Duckett and Crawley knitted a strong 188-run partnership. The former slammed a ton. While Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped him once, he missed the 150-run mark by just a single run. Crawley, on the other hand, scored a gritty 65 off 126 balls. Rain stopped play in the second session, and up until the 42nd over, England hadn’t lost a single wicket.

Prasidh-Thakur Add Life To The Game

Just when India’s shoulders began to drop, Prasidh Krishna got a big breakthrough of Zak Crawley. He bowled a beautiful outswinger and lured Zak Crawley into the drive, only for the ball to swing late and take the edge straight to KL Rahul at slip.

With that opening, India saw a hope. Krishna struck again to clean up Ollie Pope, who scored a century in the first inning. The turning point of the game for India was Shardul Thakur.

In the 55th over, he first forced Duckett to hole out to Nitish Reddy on 149, and his next target was Harry Brook. Brook, who scored 99 in the first inning, got unlucky again to be dismissed on a golden duck. With that, he set the record of being the only batter to score 99 and a golden duck in a single Test match.

With that dual wicket over, England went from 188/0 to 253/4 before rain interrupted play again and an early tea break was called.

England Beat India To Win First Test

Ben Stokes and Joe Root frustrated India initially into the third session with a 49-run partnership. A desperate India not only missed a couple of chances in the field but also burned all reviews. Regardless of sloppy fielding, Ravindra Jadeja got a breakthrough, dismissing Stokes on 33 off 51 balls.

However, it wasn’t enough, as Joe Root held his end to slam a gritty half-century. Jamie Smith hit a six to finish off in style as England chased down 371 runs successfully in 82 overs to win the Headingley Test and take a 1-0 lead in the 5-game series. For India, Bumrah went wicketless while Krishna and Thakur grabbed 2 wickets each.
