Harry Brook saw his luck deceive him again as he got dismissed for a golden duck in the fourth inning of the Headingley Test between England and India. Brook scored 99 in the second inning and became only the 5th batter to get dismissed on 99 and 0 in a single Test match.
In response to India’s 471, England responded aggressively with the bat. Ollie Pope scored a century in the second inning, followed by another great partnership between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith.
However, Brook got unlucky as he got dismissed on 99 by Prasidh Krishna, missing out on a well-deserved hundred.
Harry Brook Joins Unwanted List With 99 And 0 In Headingley Test
In the fourth inning, England were tasked to chase down 371 runs. Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett knitted a 188-run strong opening partnership. However, Prasidh Krishna struck twice to remove Crawley and Pope.
Harry Brook had to anchor the inning as centurion Ben Duckett was also dismissed by Shardul Thakur. Instead, he fell prey to Thakur. Facing his very first ball, he tried to glance a leg-side delivery from Thakur but only managed a faint edge.
Pant took a sharp catch diving to his left, and suddenly, the England crowd was stunned as Brook walked back on a golden duck.
Scoring 99 in a Test innings is painful, but imagine following that up with a duck (0) in the next innings. It’s a rare and unfortunate double, and only a few players in Test history have experienced it.
In the ongoing India vs England Test at Headingley, Harry Brook became the latest to join this unusual club. Previously, Pakistan’s Babar Azam and Misbah-Ul-Haq joined the unlucky list.
Batters to Score 99 and 0 in a Test Match:
- Pankaj Roy (India) v Australia at Delhi in 1959
- Mushtaq Mohammad (Pakistan) v England at Karachi in 1973
- Misbah-ul-Haq (Pakistan) v West Indies at Barbados, 2017
- Babar Azam (Pakistan) v Australia at Abu Dhabi, 2018
- Harry Brook (England) v India at Headingley, 2025
Harry Brook is also the first batter to be dismissed for 99 in the first innings and bag a golden duck in the second innings in Test cricket's history.
Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur’s twin strike gave India some hope to fight. Rain interrupted play again as the tea break was called early. In the last session, England now needs 102 to win, whereas India are required to chip 6 more wickets to win this contest.
